Nada (Powell County)

The Mountain Hope initiative in Powell County focuses on the small community of Nada. Community residents are proud of the hand-carved Nada Tunnel, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as the gateway to the Red River Gorge. Originally a logging community, Nada is now home to just over 50 families. Mountain Hope operates out of the Nada Baptist Mission, a mission of First Baptist Church of Winchester, Kentucky.  A jewerly making co-op, GORGEous Gals, began in Nada in the fall of 2008.  Read more about this enterprise here.

Opportunities

Groups or individuals wishing to serve in Nada have many opportunities. Construction projects, kids and youth camps, and adult education initiatives constitute the majority of ways folks can get involved. John Owen, pastor of First Baptist Winchester and the Nada Baptist Mission, and Paula Settle, missionary to Nada and Owsley County, are happy to help teams find meaningful opportunities to come alongside local residents working for positive change for the community.

For more information, contact Mountain Hope at info@mountainhopeky.org, or read more about serving in Nada in the Volunteer Information Handbook.

During the spring, KBF hosts a youth mission weekend in Nada.  For more information about this event or to register, please click here.
